MUS 117 HISTORY OF JAZZ

A survey of the major movements in jazz, tracing its origin and progressing from New Orleans through the avant-garde movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s. A focus on major jazz works – albums, songs, improvisational styles – all of which will be focal points in discussing larger issues of blues culture, African-American traditions, and key performers. A consideration of the social, psychological, racial, and gender implications of jazz with emphasis on listening skills. Lectures, recordings, readings, and performances when possible.
