ITL 302 DANTE'S INFERNO AND BEYOND

After more than 700 years, Dante’s Divine Comedy is still a renowned and appreciated work of world literature, with countless translations and adaptations across the centuries. But how is Dante’s work still thought-provoking in the 21st century? What has Dante gotten to say about themes such as justice, knowledge, education, the liberal arts, diversity, accessibility, and gender? And how do authors from around the world grapple with his legacy in their own rewritings? This course explores the Inferno, the first part of Dante’s Comedy. Along with the poem, students will analyze various global adaptations of the text through different media, such as visual arts, films, video games, and political speeches.
