HIS 348 WEST AFRICA IN WOMENS VOICES

This course explores West African history through texts composed and performed by women of the region from the 13th century to the present. By examining a variety of sources—oral tradition, legal records, popular songs, Islamic pedagogical verse, letters, films, and novels—we consider how the experiences of women and non-binary people challenge dominant narratives of history that have excluded them.
