GIS 201 POWER/RESISTNCE IN MIDDLE EAST

This course discusses the formation and boundaries of the idea of a ‘Middle East.’ Situating contemporary forms of resistance within global histories of empire, capitalism, and resistance from late 19th century capitalist transformations through the 2011 revolutions, this course examines feminist challenges to religious fundamentalism and state violence, Kurdish and Palestinian movements vis-à- vis colonizing states, the 2011 revolutions and their aftermath, contestations over archives and historical narratives, anti-authoritarian movements, and the resistance of Middle Eastern diasporas against European racisms.
