FYS 1029 SPANISH AND THE SPOKEN WORD

This seminar explores how language changes across time and space and in contact with other languages and cultures. Students will examine sociolinguistic research on spoken varieties of Spanish from different regions to study the influence of geography, gender, power, religion, and immigration on language. The course seeks to define the concepts of "speech" and "dialect" and to explain how culture and language are intertwined. No prior knowledge of Spanish is required.
