FYS 1004 THE POLITICS OF CITIZENSHIP

A critical examination of the complexities of citizenship in the modern and contemporary world, with a particular focus on Europe and the Middle East. Some questions we will think through together: What does it mean to be a "citizen" and what are the rights and responsibilities that come with it? What does it mean to have "full citizenship"? Who gets excluded from citizenship and why? Students will read about and discuss topics such as voter suppression, extraterritorial citizenship, naturalization/denaturalization, statelessness, immigration/emigration, expatriation, and border policies.
