FRH 329 FRENCH CINEMA

An exploration of how French cinema reflects and creates the modern French nation, economically and culturally, domestically and internationally. This course provides an introduction to the techniques of cinematic analysis, and to the major periods, directors, movements, and trends of French Cinema, including the Avant-Garde, Poetic Realism/Front Populaire Cinema, the New Wave, Cinéma du Look, Banlieue film, Francophone cinema, and auteurism, with filmmakers such as Lumière, Meliès, Dulac, Duvivier, Godard, Truffaut, Marker, Rohmer, Kieslowski, Kechiche, Sissako, and Bouzid.  The films studied will be employed to highlight the perceptual, political, social, and historical situation of 20th- and 21st -century France.
