ART 222H MAKING COMICS: WORLDBUILDING

From fictional languages to invented cosmologies, artists and creators draw us into fantastical worlds through the thoroughness of their worldbuilding. Students will discuss and analyze fictional worlds from across comics, popular media, literature, and film, while completing a series of drawing and writing exercises designed to help build out a fictional world of their own. Assignments include character sheets, environment design exercises, and historical research into existing material cultures. The class culminates in students creating a short narrative comic in the world they have designed.
