ANT 394 FIELD ARCHAEOLOGY METHODS

Experiential training in field-based data-collection methods and techniques in the context of new and ongoing archaeological investigations in the College’s 750-acre Arboretum. Depending on the project, methods and equipment training can include experience with archaeological surface reconnaissance, survey and mapping, ground-penetrating radar (GPR), handheld GPS, total station, small-scale subsurface testing, and formal excavation. Emphasis is placed on ethical field data-collection practices and rigorous recording procedures. Project-specific training can include preliminary data analysis, interpretation, and presentation to general and specialized audiences. Fieldwork occurs in the outdoors and often on one or both weekend days.
