ANT 214 MUSLIM CULTURES AND SOCIETIES

This course introduces students to the anthropological study of Islam. Students will explore how anthropologists have understood the category of religion and how Islam has been defined. The course examines how teachings are negotiated by Muslims around the world. Some guiding questions include: What are shared values, and what is distinctive in each environment? How do we account for these similarities and differences? Topics include modest dress, food prohibitions, marriage practices, understandings about gender and sexuality, and FGM.
