SPA 413 SOCIAL AND REGIONAL DIALECTS

This course centers on how dialects of Spanish around the world are shaped by geography and society as evidenced by sociolinguistic studies. The course compares language used inside and outside of cities; analyzes how social factors such as age, race, gender, and socioeconomic status influence speech; and explores how migration provokes unique situations of language change. A major goal of the course is to recognize trends that predict future language change or maintenance.
