HIS 266 GREAT MIGRATION & ITS LEGACY

Between 1916 and 1970, over five million African Americans left the South to seek new and better lives in the urban North and West. This course examines the meaning and legacy of this underappreciated social movement, placing it in the longer history of both black migration and black political thought. Students will explore how migrants forged new communities and laid the foundations for new political movements and forms of cultural and religious expression, often in the face of violence, hardship, and discrimination.
