FYS 1000 QUILTING: ART, REUSE, PROTEST
Students will sew a nine-patch quilt by hand, working together, while studying quilting as art, reuse, political protest, and a facet of poverty. Topics include craft, artistic process, sustainability, the quilts of Gee's Bend Alabama, the Freedom Quilting Bee (the class will have its own quilting bee), the AIDS quilt, issues of fabric and clothing waste streams, artists who use fabric as their medium, the neuroscience of making, and gendered implications of "women's work."
