ENG 381 GLOBAL GRAPHIC NOVELS

GLOBAL GRAPHIC NOVELS

A serious look at contemporary graphic narrative from around the world, with at least half of these primary texts naturally emerging from the Middle East (a major hub for their production in the twenty-first century). Authors may include Art Spiegelman, Marjane Satrapi, Joe Sacco, Alison Bechdel, Parsua Bashi, Riad Sattouf, Malik Sajad, Craig Thompson, Zeina Abirached, Amir Soltani, Magdy el Shafee, Tarek Shahin, Sherine Hamdy, Leila Abdelrazaq, and the writers of Ms. Marvel and Charlie Hebdo. The course includes comics criticism by leading voices in the field such as Scott McCloud and Hillary Chute and examines the complex history of figural and narrative representation as well as aniconism in Muslim traditions and societies.
