MUS 231 MUSIC, GENDER, AND SEXUALITY

This course introduces methodologies for the study of gender and sexuality in music and applies them to genres including musicals, opera, film scores, drag performance, and pop. Foundational readings in the study of gender and sexuality prepare an exploration of gender/queer theory in the fields of musicology, music theory, and ethnomusicology. Students will apply these theoretical lenses to repertoire ranging from the seventeenth century to the present, while investigating how gender and sexuality intersect with other forms of identity, including race, ability, and class. The ability to read music is not required.
