A study of James Baldwin, iconic U.S. civil rights era figure famous for incendiary writing on race and sexuality, from the perspective of his exile. What can we learn about belonging from Baldwin’s need to flee the U.S.?  What significance inheres not in his “fight” but in his “flight”? Texts may include Giovanni’s Room, Notes of a Native Son, and Another Country.
