EAS 225 CHINESE ART IN AMERICA

An introduction to Connecticut College’s own Chu-Griffis Asian Art Collection and prominent contemporary Chinese and Chinese American artists who have exhibited in the Charles Chu Asian Art Reading Room at the Shain Library over the past decade. Examining historical and contemporary challenges with regard to creating, collecting, and exhibiting Chinese art in the U.S., the course highlights how the Chu collection and exhibition program has uniquely contributed to promoting cultural diversity, rethinking identity and creativity, overcoming boundaries and stereotypes, and building bridges between East and West. Students will develop basic art curating skills by working together and installing a Chinese art exhibition in the Chu Room and interacting with guest artists. No prior knowledge of Chinese language, culture, or art is required.
