AHI 206 INTRODUCTION TO AFRICAN ART

An introduction to the visual arts of Africa, with emphasis on both the social and religious function of traditional art, as well as the rise of contemporary art in the postcolonial period. Topics include art in the cycle of life, masquerades, status and display, gender, Islam and Christianity, popular painting, legacies of colonialism, the history of exhibiting African art, and current debates on the ethics of collecting and repatriation.
