Hispanic Studies Major

Requirements

The major consists of a minimum of nine courses taken in the Department of Hispanic Studies. These should include four courses at the 200 level covering literary and cultural studies.  In addition to these four 200-level courses, students must complete one course from each of the following five areas distributed among the 300-level courses and the required 400-level capstone seminar:  Spain, Latin America, U.S./Latino, literary studies, and cultural studies.  The 400-level capstone course for all senior majors includes the senior research integrative project and reflection on learning shared with a broader community.  If a student completes an Honors Study as the 400-level capstone, the Honors Study may also replace one of the courses from the appropriate distribution area. With departmental guidance, students are strongly urged to study, work, and complete internships abroad, participate in SATA and TRIPS, and integrate those outcomes into coursework within the department.  The Hispanic Studies Department advises student projects from global or local internships, faculty/student collaborations, or individual research in Spanish.  With departmental approval, up to two courses may be accepted from endorsed study away programs and three from SATA programs.  Students are strongly encouraged to study, work, and complete internships abroad, and to integrate those outcomes into coursework within the department.
