REL 302 RITUAL AND PERFORMANCE

An exploration of the central role of rituals, such as initiation and sacrifice, in religious life.  Students will read central theorists of religious studies, including Clifford Geertz and Catherine Bell, and apply these theories to spirit possession in Afro-Atlantic religions and veiling for Muslim women. The course questions the boundaries between ritual, artistic expression, and gender performance.
