PSY 210 PSYCHOLOG DISORDERS/DYSFUNCT

An examination of psychological disorder, dysfunction, and well-being with a focus on mental health equity. Students will seek to understand the frameworks mental health professionals typically use to describe, understand, treat, and prevent mental health conditions. The course investigates ways in which mental health conditions have been misunderstood and stigmatized, and how ethnocentric mental health theory and practice in the predominantly white U.S. mental health system has contributed to persistent mental health disparities and inequities. The course develops a more inclusive and multicultural perspective on mental health research, theory, and practice by attending to social identity, power and privilege and seeking to cultivate an attitude of cultural humility as people and as students of psychology.
