An exploration of how the Soviet Union - the world's first socialist state - came into being, why it eventually fell apart, and its legacies up to today.

This course may include an optional section that will meet for an additional hour each week to discuss supplemental readings in Russian. Students participating in the foreign language section will receive an additional credit hour, pass/not passed marking.
