FLM 305 WHITENESS IN CINEMA & CULTURE

An introduction to critical race theory as well as post-colonial theory through the framework of whiteness in cinema. Divided into four parts – historical background, representations, looking relations, and appropriations – this course examines the cultural construct of whiteness as constituted by discourses of gender, beauty, genre, and class, from 19th century settler politics through present-day U.S. Students will examine different ways through which the relevance of whiteness in moving image history has and continues to have an effect on our cultural understanding of the Other.
