AHI 288 MUSEUMS, RACE, AND RACISM

A consideration of the representation of race and the rise of institutional policies that have entrenched racism and oppression in museums.  The course begins with colonial expositions and traces the perpetuation of structural injustice in museums of art, anthropology, and natural history.  Case studies include specific exhibits, recent controversies, and the rise of action groups that seek transformation and justice.
