ITL 402 CREATIVITY AND THE MODERN AGE

An exploration of the creative process, the making of new identities, and the establishment of artists’ enclaves in cultural and historical context though an analysis of relevant works by writers, artists, filmmakers, educators, and other key cultural figures at the turn of the 19th century and early 20th century. The course primarily focuses on works created in Italy, with frequent comparisons with works produced elsewhere. Italian authors, artists, and filmmakers may include Sibilla Aleramo, Maria Montessori, Luigi Pirandello, and Giovanni Pastrone. Artistic movements in Italy and beyond may include Futurism, Vorticism, Dadaism, Surrealism, and the Harlem Renaissance.

Course is in English.  This course may include an optional section that will meet for an additional hour each week to discuss supplemental readings in Italian. Students participating in the foreign language section will receive one additional credit hour, pass/not passed marking.

Prerequisite

Open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors; and to first year students with permission of the instructor.

Enrollment Limit

Enrollment limited to 16 students.
