ITL 316 CUL IDENT IN ITALY & ADJ AREAS

Study of cultural identity through literature, film, socio-political writings and historical documents primarily focused on Risorgimento, the Italian South (e.g. questione meridionale and mafia) and contemporary Italy in relation to the Mediterranean area. Analysis directed toward techniques of representation, along with diverse conceptions of ethnicity, nationalism, regionalism, gender, race and class that fueled debates about the North and the South and that led to movements of resistance to correct unjust bias and inequality. A variety of works by authors who may include Matilde Serao, Elena Ferrante, Francesco Rosi, Roberta Torre, Tahar Ben Jelloun and Franco Cassano. Conducted in Italian.
