HIS 103 AFRICAN HISTORY BEFORE 1800

This survey introduces major societies and themes in African history before 1800, from ancient Egypt, through the empires of the Middle Ages, to the emergence of the Atlantic world. Emphasis is on the diverse internal dynamics of early African societies as well as their longstanding global connections. Students will investigate how conflicting interpretations of African history have been used to justify (or challenge) contemporary ideas about race and colonialism.
