LITERATURE & SCIENCE IN SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY ENGLAND.  This course examines the long, messy divorce of literature and science in the seventeenth century. We will explore literary works concerned with knowledge of the physical world and scientific works concerned with the nature of language, as well as science-poetry, science fiction, and educational theory. A particular concern will be the role of gender, class, and race in the theory and practice of science. Readings may include Shakespeare, Bacon, Browne, Cavendish, Boyle, Milton, Newton, Somerset, Behn, and Pepys.
