ART 222D CLAY IN THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT

Clay in the human-made environment takes many forms – buildings, ornament, monument,
infrastructure, the ordering of landscape and interior spaces, and objects designed to work
aesthetically and functionally in lived spaces. This studio/seminar course examines the use of
ceramic material in the built environment throughout time and across cultures while introducing skills
and conceptual issues particular to clay construction, glazing and firing. Individual directions will be
encouraged, with emphasis on clay as a material that serves human needs.
