ART 217 CERAMIC SCULPT:VESSEL CONSTRUC

Ceramic Sculpture: Vessel Constructions is designed for students who wish to explore clay as a raw material that directly records human action through the study and articulation of pottery and vessel forms. A variety of hand building methods and construction tools including (but not limited to) the potter's wheel will be introduced, along with an understanding of clay's geological origins and the processes associated with mixing, firing, and glazing clay. The aim of this course is to gain skill in the medium, create opportunities for personal expression, and engage in critical discourse as a maker. Students will look at ceramic history, contemporary art, and material culture as they learn to decode the conceptual parameters of a "pot" and to consider the social and historical contexts that objects and their narratives occupy.
