Urban Renewal in America: New London

After Word War II, many U.S. cities planned large-scale redevelopment projects. These building campaigns were both creative and destructive. New London was transformed when a stretch of the I-95 was put through one of its historic neighborhoods. This course explores the history and legacy of urban renewal, undertaking an in-depth study of its impact on New London. Students will conduct oral history interviews with former residents, research archives, and document urban spaces. In workshops with visiting experts, the class will discuss concepts in digital humanities scholarship, particularly using GIS software to map historical change in cities.
