SPA 201F STUDY AWAY SEMINAR (IN SPAN)

This course serves as a space for orientation and critical reflection for students preceding their semester abroad or international internship in Spanish.  It examines the construct of traveling, studying, working or volunteering abroad as a form of attaining knowledge, improving skills and cultural sensitivity, and as a key contribution to the college experience through impactful planning in a four-year cycle.  Through discussions of theoretical texts, essays in the humanities and visual cultural material, students will explore such themes as the authenticity of knowledge and experiences gained abroad, second language acquisition, patterns of consumption, globalization, cultural tourism, social justice, and the values and privileges associated with the concept of “study away.”
