GOV 222 CC: TORTURE & TERROR POST 9/11

Torture, Terror and Truth in Post 9/11 Politics and Culture  Since the September 11th terrorist attacks, and the resultant U.S.-led "Global War on Terror," torture has been a popular money maker for Hollywood film and television producers. This course examines the reality of US torture in the GWOT,  the trends in cultural portrayals of this torture  and the impact of these portrayals on  public opinion, public policy, and efforts to bring torturers to justice and memorialize 9/11's victims.  The course is centered on the concept of "cultural memory," as a space between individual memories and formal history, and examines the ongoing impact of cultural memory on the politics of truth and justice in the United States two decades after 9/11.
