GOV 203 INTERNATIONAL SECURITY

An introduction to the subfield of international security, focusing on why, how, and under what conditions states and non-state actors use force to achieve political objectives. The course focuses on questions such as: What is security? What are the different strategies available to states and their adversaries? How do nuclear weapons and other technologies shape strategic calculations? What lessons does the history of international security relations suggest about security in the 21st century? Topics may include nuclear proliferation, terrorism, counterinsurgency, and grand strategy.
