FYS 100H BEYOND THE BALLOT

This interdisciplinary seminar, focused on applied civic and political engagement, explores forms of mass political engagement in the United States including voting, community engagement, and social change. As we examine these forms of engagement (through dialogue, simulations, voter registration drives, volunteering, etc.), we will explore such questions as: Why do some people participate in politics, while others choose to abstain? What are some strategies to mobilize people? To what extent do people discuss politics (in-person and online) in a deliberative and meaningful manner? We will also play a significant role in supporting the Connecticut College 2020 Action Plan and the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Votes initiative, a partnership with NESCAC member schools and the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge.
